SBS900D and SBS2593T on Service 9

Overview

The Volvo B10M is a popular mid-engined bus and coach chassis built by Volvo between 1978 and 2001. It was built as the successor of the B58 and was equipped with a 9.6-litre horizontally-mounted Volvo THD100/THD101/THD102/THD103/THD104/DH10A diesel engine mounted under the floor, near the middle of the chassis, slightly toward the front. An articulated version under the model name Volvo B10MA was also offered.

Singapore Bus Services/SBS Transit

SBS had purchased and operated a total of 989 Volvo B10M buses over the years, including a double deck, a superlong and a articulated variant.

Demonstrators (Mark I)

Double Deck Demonstrator

In 1984, SBS received a double deck B10MD Mark I for demonstration. It was bodied by East Lancs and was operated until the end of its lifespan. No further orders of the double deck variant was made.

Single Deck Demonstrator

In 1986, SBS received a single deck B10M Mark I for demonstration. It was bodied by Van Hool and featured air-conditioning. It was operated up to 2000, before being sold and exported New Zealand.

Mark II

Duple Metsec

The trial of the single deck demonstrator was a success, and SBS made an order of 200 B10M Mark II chassis. 100 buses were bodied by Duple Metsec. Originally delivered as non air-conditioned buses, some of these buses were later converted into fully air-conditioned.

SBS1793P was converted into a "Magic Bus" while SBS1867K was converted into a "Heritage on the Move" bus for the National Heritage Board, and served their purposes until retirement.

All of these buses were retired by 2008 at the end of their lifespan.

Walter Alexander PS

The other 100 buses received the "PS" body by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders. Originally delivered as non air-conditioned buses, some of these buses were later converted into fully air-conditioned.

All of these buses were retired by 2008 at the end of their lifespan, with the exception of SBS1836A that was sold and exported New Zealand in 2006.

Mark III

In 1992, SBS made an additional order of 300 B10M Mark III chassis. All of them were bodied by Duple Metsec, and featured air-conditioning. The specifications remained largely similar to the Mark II units. The bodywork design is also similar to those Mark II units that were bodied by Duple Metsec, with minor changes. The interior design was also updated to match the other air-conditioned buses operated by SBS during the era. Some of these buses were registered for use on cross border services, and was fitted with an additional centre brake light.

All of these buses were retired by 2012 at the end of their lifespan.

Mark IV

PSV International/Soon Chow

In 1993, SBS Leisure made a purchase of 20 B10M Mark IV chassis, registered with the 'SH' prefix for use on shuttle services in Sentosa. All 20 buses were bodied by Soon Chow, with kits from PSV International. These buses were fitted with the Mobitec flip-dot Electronic Destination Signage (EDS) and painted in the Sentosa livery. When the contract for the Sentosa shuttle ended in 2004, 10 of these buses were transferred to SBS Transit and were re-registered under the 'SBS' prefix while the remaining buses remained with SBS Leisure, and were re-registered under the 'PA' prefix. The EDS was also removed and all the buses were repainted.

Those that were transferred to SBS Transit were retired by 2011 at the end of their lifespan.

Duple Metsec

In 1995, SBS made a purchase of 115 B10M Mark IV chassis. These buses received the Duple Metsec bodywork and featured an updated exterior and interior design.

All of these buses were retired by 2015 at the end of their lifespan.

Walter Alexander Strider

Also in 1995, SBS made a further purchase of 150 B10M Mark IV chassis. They received the "Strider" bodywork by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders. Some of these buses were registered for use on cross border services, and was fitted with an additional centre brake light.

Solar panels were fitted to the roof of SBS2652G in 2011 to supply additional power to the electrical components onboard the bus.

All of these buses were retired by 2015 at the end of their lifespan, with the exception of SBS1992G that was converted into "Molly", a mobile library bus for the National Library Board in 2012, which served its purpose until retirement in 2016.

Duple Metsec 3500

In 1996, SBS made a final purchase of 150 B10M Mark IV chassis. All of these buses received the updated "3500" bodywork by Duple Metsec. Overall specifications remained largely similar to the previous order, with the interior design updated. Some of these buses were registered for use on cross border services, and was fitted with an additional centre brake light.

SBS2729U had its side destination panel replaced with a Mobilis Media LCD display in 2007, but was removed after a few months as only the details of a single service could be displayed. SBS2754X is fitted with outswing plug doors, while SBS2779A was originally fitted with Transit Media EDS.

SBS2744A was converted into a "Mainly I Love Kids (MILK)" bus, a mobile gallery bus for the I Love Children organisation in 2014.

These buses are currently in the midst of retirement.

Superlong Demonstrator

In 1995, SBS received a 14.5 meter long B10M Mark IV chassis, named the "Superlong". It received the Duple Metsec bodywork, which is similar in exterior and interior design to the 12 meter counterparts. Due to its length, the rear was tapered to reduce the risk of accidents whilst the bus is turning. It was fitted with the Mobitec flip-dot EDS and was painted in a unique SBS livery. It was later repainted into the standard SBS Transit livery.

The trial was unsuccessful, with no further orders of 14.5 meter long buses. The bus was retired in 2012 at the end of its lifespan.

Articulated Demonstrator

In 1996, SBS received a 19 meter long B10MA Mark IV chassis. Due to its length, it was Asia's longest bus, and was labelled as such. Like the Superlong, it also received the Duple Metsec bodywork and featured the same tapered rear. It was also fitted with the Mobitec flip-dot EDS, and was painted in another unique SBS livery.

The articulated bus trial was later joined by another 18 meter long bus from Mercedes-Benz, but was ultimately unsuccessful with no further orders of articulated buses. It was operated up to 2006, before being sold and exported to New Zealand.
