The Scania K-series is a series of chassis in Scania's city bus and coach range with longitudinally, straight-up mounted engine at the rear, replacing the K- (K94, K114, K124) and L-type (L94) chassis of the 4-series. The K-series was first presented on Busworld 2005 in Kortrijk, Belgium and models were available from 2006.
The K230UB is essentially the city bus version of the K-Series chassis, with a 230hp engine.
SBS Transit currently operates at total of 1,101 Scania K230UB buses. These buses were acquired between 2007 and 2010 as part of SBS Transit's fleet renewal programme. They are the first wheelchair accessible single-deck buses ordered by SBS Transit, fitted with a manual wheelchair ramp at the exit.
Some of the Euro IV buses are currently registered for use on cross border services. One of the most distinguishing feature is the additional centre brake light that was installed on such buses.
For increased road safety, an additional rear CCTV camera is installed on certain buses and more recently, these buses are progressively being fitted with the Mobileye 560 Advanced Driver Assistance System.
SBS Transit received a demonstrator K230UB unit bodied by Gemilang Coachwork for evaluation in 2007. The demonstrator featured slightly different exterior and interior design. The front and rear design was later modified to those of the production batch and the seat covers were standardised to those used on other SBS Transit buses with the Vogelsitze System 400 seats.
Euro IV Batch 1
In 2007, SBS Transit announced its first purchase of 500 Euro IV K230UBs at a cost of $180 million. This first batch of 100 buses was similar in specifications to the demonstrator, but the interior and exterior design was updated.
Euro IV Batch 2
The design and specifications of this second batch of 400 buses is largely similar to the first batch of 100 buses. An additional Vogelsitze System 601 seat is installed at the wheel arch behind the driver's compartment.
Additional overhead grab poles were also installed at the front half on SBS8143U and SBS8255E to better stabilise the vertical grab poles, while SBS8405P had its Electronic Destination Signage (EDS) replaced with a set from LECIP in 2011 for a short while, before reverting back to the original.
Euro V Batch 1
In 2008, SBS Transit made a purchase of another 400 K230UBs at a cost of $147 million. The engine specification was updated to the Euro V standard. Overall, these buses are similar in interior design to the Euro IV units, with an additional wheel arch seat behind the entrance and a wheelchair bay converted for seating. The exterior also received minor changes in design to the front and rear.
SBS8689L had its original outswing plug doors replaced with sliding plug doors from Masats in 2013, but was reverted back to the original in 2016.
Euro V Batch 2
In 2009, SBS Transit made another purchase for 200 Euro V K230UBs at a cost of $72 million. The specifications are kept identical to the earlier batch of 400 buses.
