Overview

The Mercedes-Benz O405 was a rear-engined single-decker bus manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. It was the last VöV SL-II standard bus in production. It was the replacement for the Mercedes-Benz O305 and was widely used in Europe, United Kingdom, Australia and Singapore. Last purchase of the model, O405NH was to State Transit Authority of Sydney, Australia from 1999–2002.

The O405G is essentially the articulated version of the O405.

Singapore Bus Services/SBS Transit

SBS used to operate one demonstrator unit of the Mercedes-Benz O405G.

In 1997, SBS received a 18 meter long Mercedes-Benz O405G demonstrator, bodied by Volgren. It was fitted with Alcatel flip-dot Electronic Destination Signage (EDS), and was painted in a same livery as the Volvo B10MA demonstrator.

The articulated bus trial was ultimately unsuccessful with no further orders of articulated buses. It was operated up to 2006, before being sold and exported to New Zealand.

TIBS (now SMRT) had purchased and operated a total of 315 Mercedes-Benz O405G buses.

Hispano Carrocera

Mark I

In 1996, TIBS brought in one unit of the O405G for demonstration. It was bodied by Hispano to the same design as the Hispano bodied O405s purchased by TIBS at that time. The bus was delivered by air on a Spair Airlines cargo plane, and it was the first articulated bus to be operated in Singapore. It was named the "Bendy Bus".

The articulated bus trial was successful, and TIBS made a purchase of another 56 units with the same bodywork. The later buses had 6 extra seats installed in the front carriage at the expense of standing capacity. TIB890E had headrests fitted on the Vogelsitze System 600 seats. All buses were delivered with Hanover flip-dot Electronic Destination Signage (EDS).

The demonstrator was retired by 2013, and the remaining buses by 2015 at the end of their lifespan.

Mark II

In 1999, TIBS made an additional order of 29 O405Gs. They were built to the same specifications as the earlier order. These buses received the Hispano bodywork, with an updated front design that is similar to the Mercedes-Benz Citaro. All buses were delivered with Transit Media TwinVision LeDot illuminated flip-dot Electronic Destination Signage (EDS), for better visibility in dark conditions.

Habit

In 2000, TIBS made another purchase of 208 O405Gs in 2 batches. These buses featured the new "Habit" bodywork by Hispano, designed by renowned Italian designer Pininfarina. The 1st batch of 128 buses were delivered with LAWO ALUMA illuminated flip-dot EDS. The 2nd batch of 80 buses received the Euro II emissions rating, as well as illuminated flip-dot EDS supplied by Transit Media TwinVision LeDot.

TIB1105H was rebuilt after a fire, and featured an updated interior design. The original underfloor air-conditioning units that were damaged in the fire was also replaced with roof mounted air-conditioning ones by Konvekta.

Volgren CR221

Also in 2000, TIBS received a demonstrator unit with Volgren bodywork, with a custom front design similar to the Volgren O405s acquired a year ago. TIBS later purchased an additional 20 units. The last 10 buses were fitted with larger windows, and Voith gearbox like the demonstrator unit. All of the buses were delivered with illuminated flip-dot EDS, with the demonstrator fitted with a LAWO ALUMA set while the others with a Transit Media TwinVision LeDot set.
