Overview

The Mercedes-Benz O405 was a rear-engined single-decker bus manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. It was the last VöV SL-II standard bus in production. It was the replacement for the Mercedes-Benz O305 and was widely used in Europe, United Kingdom, Australia and Singapore. Last purchase of the model, O405NH was to State Transit Authority of Sydney, Australia from 1999–2002.

Singapore Bus Services/SBS Transit

SBS had purchased and operated a total of 700 Mercedes-Benz O405s between 1989 and 2011.

Walter Alexander PS

In the late 1980s, SBS made a purchase of 700 Mercedes-Benz O405 buses. 200 buses received the PS type bodywork by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders, and were all air-conditioned. To increase the overall capacity, all buses had 3 rows of seats removed to create a standing area.

All of these buses were retired by 2010 at the end of their lifespan, with some sold and exported to Thailand.

Duple Metsec

The remaining 500 buses received the Duple Metsec bodywork. 300 buses were air-conditioned and the other 200 were non air-conditioned. All of the non air-conditioned buses were eventually converted into fully air-conditioned. To increase the overall capacity, all buses except SBS293Y and SBS310G had 3 rows of seats removed to create a standing area.

All of these buses were retired by 2011 at the end of their lifespan, with some sold and exported to Thailand.

Trans-Island Bus Services/SMRT Buses

TIBS (now SMRT) had purchased and operated a total of 323 Mercedes-Benz O405 buses.

Hispano Carrocera

Original air-conditioned

In 1993, TIBS made an order of 235 O405s. Unlike the ones ordered by SBS, they were of the newer Mk II type, fitted with a turbocharged engine. The bodywork was supplied by Hispano Carrocera, which was similar in design to the earlier DAF SB220s ordered. The first 2 buses were delivered as demonstrators, and featured minor differences compared to the rest of the buses, such as TIB426M having a rear window with rounded edges. All buses were delivered with air-conditioning, and LAWO flip-dot Electronic Destination Signage (EDS).

All of these buses were retired by 2016 at the end of their lifespan.

Converted air-conditioned

In 1995, TIBS made an additional order of 73 O405s. They were built to the same specifications as the earlier order, but without air-conditioning and are fitted with Hanover flip-dot EDS. All of them were eventually converted into full air-conditioned by 2001. After refurbishment, all of the converted air-conditioned buses with the exception of TIB796U have their original set of windows replaced with brown tinted ones.

All of these buses were retired by 2015 at the end of their lifespan.

Volgren CR221

In 1999, TIBS made a final order of 15 O405s. These batch of buses were bodied by Volgren, with a custom front design. The technical specifications were kept the same as the previous orders. All buses were delivered with LAWO ALUMA illuminated flip-dot EDS, for better visibility in dark conditions.
