Overview

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro (or O530) is a single-decker bus and an articulated bus manufactured by Mercedes-Benz/EvoBus, It was introduced in 1997 and replaced the Mercedes-Benz O405/O405N series. Manufactured in Mannheim (Germany), Ligny-en-Barrois (France) and Sámano (Spain), it is available as a rigid bus with two or three axles and as an articulated bus with three or four axles. Over 40,000 have been manufactured.

SMRT Buses

SMRT Buses purchased a total of 51 Citaros between 2010 and 2011. These buses were the first single deckers to feature a full low-floor design to be operated in Singapore.

Demonstrator

In 2010, a Citaro demonstrator was sent to SMRT. It was launched as Southeast Asia's 1st 100% Low Floor Euro V Bus, and featured such an advertisement. It was built to default specifications, which included hopper windows, red fabric seat covers, buzzers for doors opening/closing, inward gliding exit doors as well as green interior lightning. A survey was also conducted during the trial to gain feedback from the public.

Batch 1

The trial of the demonstrator unit was ultimately successful, and SMRT made a purchase of 10 Citaros. The specifications was kept similar to the demonstrator unit, with the exception of the hopper windows. Unlike the demonstrator, interior fixtures were customised to SMRT's specifications, such as the seat covers, announcement for doors closing as well as outswing plug exit doors. A more powerful air-conditioning unit was also installed to better cope with the tropical climate.

Batch 2

SMRT made a final purchase of another 40 Citaros, with similar specifications as the batch 1 buses. All of the buses from the this batch were fitted with an additional centre brake light.

SBS Transit

SBS Transit made a total purchase of 1,000 of Citaros between 2010 and 2014, with more being added under Bus Service Enhancement Programme Scheme (BSEP), which are funded by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Under the Bus Contracting Model, most of the BSEP buses as well as the newer buses registered under the 'SG' prefix have been leased by the LTA to other operators.

For increased road safety, those buses that are currently operated by SBS Transit are progressively being fitted with the Mobileye 560 Advanced Driver Assistance System.

Batch 1

While the demonstrator unit was still under trial with SMRT Buses, SBS Transit announced its first purchase of 300 Citaros. Like SMRT, SBS Transit customised the interior to their own specifications, such as the seat covers, doors closing chime and the interior grab poles colour. SBS Transit also opted for a larger standing area, and as such 2 of the seats were removed before the wheelchair bay to accommodate more standing passengers. The earlier Citaros was fitted click type bus stopping bells, but was later replaced with conventional bells as they were prone to accidental pressing.

42 buses from this batch were registered under the BSEP scheme.

Batch 2

SBS Transit placed an additional order of 450 units in 2012. The specifications remain largely intact to the batch 1 buses. For increased safety, additional CCTV cameras and an extra grab pole at the bus entrance was installed. An unannounced additional order of 24 units was also added.

208 buses were registered under the BSEP scheme.

Batch 3

SBS Transit made a final order of 250 more Citaros in 2014. The specifications remain largely intact to the batch 1 and batch 2 buses. The batch 3 buses received an updated flooring design and the interior frosted glass panels were replaced with black glass panels. An unannounced additional order was also added.

28 buses from this batch were registered under SBS Transit, 55 buses under the BSEP scheme and the remaining under the BCM.
