The MAN NLxx3F is a series of low-floor single-decker city bus chassis for 10.5 to 12.0 metres length, offered by MAN since 1998, with internal code A22. They are based on the integral low-floor MAN NLxx3 Lion's City (A21). Available versions since launch include NL223F, NL233F, NL243F, NL263F, NL273F, NL283F, NL313F and NL323F. LPG and CNG versions are also available, with NL313F CNG being the most powerful.
The NL323F is essentially a low-floor single-decker city bus chassis, fitted with a 320hp engine.
SMRT made a total purchase of 734 of NL323Fs between 2010 and 2014, some of which are purchased under Bus Service Enhancement Programme Scheme (BSEP), funded by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
Under the Bus Contracting Model, some of the BSEP buses have been leased by the LTA to other operators.
In 2010, SMRT received a NL323F demonstrator, bodied by Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV). It featured an onboard television unit by LG, as well as free Wi-Fi access.
In 2013, the demonstrator was returned to the dealer. In 2015, it was sold and exported to Australia after being re-bodied by Gemilang Coachwork to the Lion's City Hybrid design.
In 2011, SMRT placed an order for 200 NL323Fs with the same specifications as the demonstrator. Gemilang Coachwork supplied the bodywork for these buses, which featured the Lion's City Hybrid design that was licensed by MAN.
SMB189A originally featured an additional step leading to the last row of seats, which was later removed.
In 2012, SMRT placed an order for another 200 NL323Fs. An unannounced order of 2 additional units was also added. These buses were built to the same specifications as the batch 1 buses. The interior featured 2 additional grab poles at the front, and later batch 2 buses had 3 seats removed to provide a larger standing area.
In 2014, SMRT placed a final order for 332 NL323Fs. These buses were built to the same specifications as the batch 2 buses. The interior now features adjustable air-conditioning vents, and doors closing announcement for the front doors. Exterior wise, the engine cover was updated with a newer design. The later batch 3 buses had Voith gearbox fitted instead of ZF.
