SBS9046K on Service 166

Overview

The Leyland Olympian was a 2-axle and 3-axle double-decker bus chassis manufactured by Leyland between 1980 and 1993. It was the last Leyland bus model in production.

Singapore Bus Services/SBS Transit

SBS had purchased and operated a total of 571 Volvo Olympian buses over the years, consisting of 2-axle non air-conditioned and 3-axle air-conditioned variants.

2-axle

In the mid 1980s, SBS purchased 200 2-axle non air-conditioned Leyland Olympians, bodied by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders. These buses were 10.4 meter long, slightly longer than the Leyland Atlanteans. To increase the overall capacity, some buses had 4 rows of seats removed to create a standing area.

All of the non air-conditioned Volvo Olympians were retired by 2003 at the end of their lifespan.

3-axle

In the early 1990s, SBS made a purchase of another 200 Leyland Olympians, bodied by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders. These buses are 12 meter long with 3-axles and featured air-conditioning. They were the first air-conditioned double-deckers purchased by SBS, named "Superbus" and painted in the new Superbus livery. These buses were the last Leyland buses to be produced, and SBS9168S is the last Leyland to roll off the production line.

All of the air-conditioned Volvo Olympians were retired by 2013 at the end of their lifespan with the exception of SBS9168S, which is preserved in the UK.
